Led by Composer/Director, Tyrone Jefferson, A Sign of the Times’ ensembles perform music from the African Diaspora, including Latin, Jazz, Classic Rhythm & Blues and Funk. The organization’s core musicians are committed to the mastery and preservation of Jazz—the only musical genre born in America. Their repertoire swings and transports listeners to the days of Dizzy, Bird, Miles and Sassy as well as Earth, Wind & Fire, Marvin Gaye, the Stylistics, Etta James and James Brown. Each musical story is told with authenticity and reverence to the great ones that came before us.

Governed by the Charlotte-based 501-C (3) non-profit—A Sign of the Times of the Carolinas—the ensembles are the vehicles used to accomplish the organization’s mission to preserve the legacy of the African Diaspora through music, dance and the spoken word.

About the Diversity Celebration

The Diversity Celebration features a wide array of local and international music, eclectic dancing, delectable food, and imaginative crafts. Appalachian students, faculty, staff, K-12 schools, and members of the local community are all invited to join us in this celebration of cultures through art and entertainment.

The Diversity Celebration supports and enhances Appalachian State University's mission of "accepting the responsibility to be actively involved in addressing the educational, economic, cultural, and societal needs of the changing region, state, nation, and world," by providing a venue where diverse perspectives, cultures and values are accepted, appreciated and celebrated.
